In 3 years I want to be the engineer a team turns to when a project is hard and ambiguous — where the technical answer isn't obvious and there's no PM telling us what to ship. Concretely, that probably means staff engineer at a team of 10–30, owning a problem domain end-to-end with one or two more junior engineers I'm responsible for growing. I'm less interested in management at this stage; I want another two or three years of direct technical depth first, especially in distributed systems, before I'd seriously consider moving into management.
